The scent of dinner—chicken noodle soup—permeated my room upstairs, making my stomach growl, which was the first time all week I’d felt enticed by food. But a different scent forced me to stay right where I was. Leather and clove—Pierce.
Not only had he dropped me here and expected me to just smile and say, “Yes, alpha. Thank you, alpha. Whatever you think is best, alpha,” he hadn’t visited the house yesterday.
I didn’t want to see him, but we’d been here at Sunshine House for a week, and he’d spent several hours each day lurking downstairs. I’d almost been on the verge of forgiving him enough to talk to him again. Then yesterday? Nothing. Without so much as a whisper of his scent.
Jerk.
The food poisoning had lasted longer than I expected, and seemed to come in waves each day, which was making me think I’d picked up some kind of stomach bug instead. Or maybe it was my lucky day, and I’d managed to get both.
Right now was one of those times when the wave was strong.
I grabbed the little trash can by the side of my bed and held it in front of my face as I scrambled out of the bedroom and to the bathroom, slamming the door shut behind me. I made it to the toilet in time. I’d been downing Gatorade to keep my electrolytes balanced and get some nourishment in me. The bright blue was the only flavor I could stomach, so the contents of my stomach were… interesting.
Thank goodness I hadn’t had to use the trash can yet. I was pretty sure that cleaning it would just cause a second round of retching.
I leaned against the bathtub and took a few deep breaths, waiting for the sense of weakness to pass, then stumbled to my feet to wash my hands and face.
For the first time, I realized the mirror was also a cupboard—probably a medicine cabinet. Just a sign of how out of it I’d felt all week. I opened it.
Jackpot.
Pain relievers, hemorrhoid cream, laxative—nope. Did they have any nausea suppressants? I didn’t know any name brands, but it should say—
My eyes fell on a box of pregnancy tests and passed them, then shot back, as if snapped back into place by a rubber band.
Surely not. It was only one night. Yes, I’d been in heat, but, I was on suppressants… We hadn’t marked each other…
I anxiously counted one hundred and twenty seconds after peeing on the stick, refusing to look until I was finished counting. One-hundred and eighteen. One hundred and nineteen. One hundred and twenty.
Two pink lines.
I rubbed my eyes.
Two. Pink. Lines.
I shook my head, grabbing the test and escaping back to my room, forgetting my trash can. Immediately, I was on my phone to look up how common false positives were, but I was distracted by an email notification with the subject, I’m sorry, Adrian, from Carolyn, the director of Little Paws.
Distracted, I opened the email instead and scanned it quickly.
Dear Adrian,
